Questions people ask

How is the average price worked out?

Total spent ÷ total shares. A big buy at one price pulls the average towards it more than a small one.

What is averaging down?

Buying more after a fall to lower your average cost. It lowers the price needed to break even, but adds to a position that is losing.

Does the tax office use the same average?

The UK uses a pooled average (section 104 holding), and Canada uses adjusted cost base, both close to this. The US lets you pick lots, so the cost of the shares you sell can differ.
