Questions people ask
What is dividend yield?
Yearly dividends ÷ share price. A $100 share paying $3.50 a year yields 3.5%.
What does reinvesting do?
Each dividend buys more shares, which pay their own dividends. Over decades this is a large part of stock market returns.
Are dividends taxed?
Usually. The US taxes qualified dividends at 0%, 15% or 20%, the UK above a £500 allowance, and Canada and Australia give credits for tax the company paid. Tax-free accounts such as ISAs, Roth IRAs and TFSAs avoid it.
