You are not expected to clear it. Overpaying would mostly reduce the amount written off, not what you pay.

Questions people ask
Which plan am I on?
Plan 1 if you started in England or Wales before September 2012, or in Northern Ireland. Plan 2 if you started in England or Wales from September 2012 to July 2023. Plan 5 if you started in England from August 2023. Plan 4 if you studied from Scotland. Your Student Loans Company account shows your plan.
When is my loan written off?
Plan 1 after 25 years, Plans 2 and 4 and Postgraduate after 30 years, and Plan 5 after 40 years, counted from the April after you leave your course. Some older Plan 1 and Plan 4 loans end at age 65 instead.
Should I overpay?
Only if you expect to clear the loan before it is written off. If not, overpaying just lowers the amount written off. Most Plan 2 and Plan 5 borrowers on average salaries do not clear their loan.
