Questions people ask
How is my refund worked out?
Your refund is the federal tax withheld from your pay minus the tax you actually owe for the year after credits. If less was withheld than you owe, you pay the difference.
Where do I find tax withheld?
Box 2 of your W-2. Before the year ends, use the year-to-date federal income tax on your latest payslip and scale it to the full year.
What does this leave out?
State tax, itemized deductions and credits other than the Child Tax Credit, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit and education credits. Those can make your refund bigger.
