Tax 44,000 × 20% + 11,000 × 40% = 13,200.00 − credits 4,000 = 9,200.00
USC 12,012 × 0.5% + … on 55,000 = 1,182.82

Questions people ask
What changed for 2026?
The 2% USC band now runs to €28,700, up from €27,382. The tax bands and credits stayed the same. Employee PRSI rose from 4.2% to 4.35% on 1 October 2026.
How much does a pension contribution save?
Paying 5% (€2,750) of €55,000 into a pension cuts your income tax by €1,100, because you get relief at 40%, so it costs you €1,650 from your take-home. It still counts for USC and PRSI.
Is this right for the self-employed?
No. It is for PAYE employees. The self-employed do not get the €2,000 employee credit (they get the earned income credit instead) and pay PRSI at Class S.
